It was used where I was working ca. 2006/07 and I started to dislike it and replaced it with rsync. Reason: It stopped working if the file storage had grown to a certain size (ca. 400 GB if I remember correctly). It just gave an advice as "please split your file transfers (e.g. using subdirs)" That wasn't easily achieved because the file location was stored in a DB too. It never happened with rsync. Rsync had occasional hickups, and the error messages were far from perfect but the next iteration (usually 15 minutes later) would pick it up.
