Wow, that's really thick.  The conductors probably wouldn't be any thinner as 
there is much less need for insulation on low voltage wires.

I've seen an Apple PowerBook give some information on that.  I'm not sure 
whether it was rounded to the nearest 500mA or whether it was actually 
measured.  It was at a LUV Beginner SIG meeting, maybe the PowerBook owner in 
question can comment here.
