Actually Swift can do one thing ceph doesn't swift has really awesome geographic replication built in. http://swiftstack.com/blog/2012/09/16/globally-distributed-openstack-swift-cluster/ http://www.mirantis.com/blog/configuring-multi-region-cluster-openstack-swift/ Once that gets added to ceph there is very little use for anything but ceph. (Ceph can also act as a back end store for hadoop)
