Keep using the Samba server. Install a VPN client on their machines so they can continue accessing it remotely. (I recommend L2TP/IPsec as the least-effort option, with OS X and Windows supporting it natively.) (I don't recommend exposing Samba to the internet without a VPN. I did that once.
