If you are an Emacs user, you could try Emacs diary, which can import/export
icalendar format as supported by Google and others.

I use Remind for this purpose, but I don't need to associate it with another
calendar, hence its lack of in-built icalendar support doesn't stand in my
way. I am reasonably confident that there are scripts available to convert in
both directions though.

Another possibility is the googlecl package, which includes some calendar
support (I know it isn't quite what you want however).
