I've read good reports about Claws-mail. Dovecot performs indexing of all the maildir folders that it accesses, which should help performance on the IMAP server side. You then need a MUA that doesn't download all of the messages whenever you access a folder. If memory serves, Thunderbird does this in order to support better text searching, but obviously this has performance consequences.
