Hi Russell, Toby is right. In Melbourne, the best group to ask anything 3D printing (especially FOSS ones), is the CCHS. And joining their mailing list is the way to go.
To do so, just go to CCHS web site: http://www.hackmelbourne.org/ - CCHS Lists, and subscribe to their Main List (a googlegroup). Once done, you should be able to post your 3D printing related questions to it, and I'm sure should get lots of helpful tips in no time. I recently did the same thing, subscribed to CCHS Main List so I could send them an invite to the SFD13.
