well thanks - I am actually thinking that way too - (really).
There are some curly things in Linux and I would like to help.
Busy weekend ( one year older...) but I'll get back to you on this.
The way Novell did this was to assign strings to the stages of printing 
and issue them before and after. This led me to create some non-printing 
situations where I was sending codes to devices to turn on/off etc
