"Audiophile" brand hi-fi gear is ludicrously over-priced and over-hyped. You can indeed get some pretty good quality speakers for good prices if you step away from the audiophile kool aid. It's probably telling that, to my knowledge, actual sound engineers don't use those exotic brands, and they're the ones mastering the albums you're playing upon said exotic audiophile brands...
I have a pair of Presonus' "Eris" monitor (as in sound monitor) speakers either side of my (graphical) monitor at home; they seem to do a good job too, and I'd recommend them if someone was looking. The only hiccup I've found with *some* of the cheaper or PC-speaker-originated brands is that the capacitors are woeful; I've heard numerous examples where the power supply filtering caps have gone bad, and there's an increasing amount of 50 Hz hum over time. I've bothered to replace the capacitors on some items, but I wish they wouldn't fail so fast!
