the 'renice' command can be used to change the priority of a process.
e.g. to make a process use only 'idle' cpu time, you need to find its
process id (PID) and then:
renice -n 19 $PID
another command, 'ionice', can be used to set the I/O priority of a
process (but this won't help this thunderbird issue as the imapd process
is running on the server, not the client)
