Hi Brian, Based on what you had described: Grub loads fine. But when selecting any Linux kernel from grub, results in the computer freezing immediately after loading the kernel ... with a black screen ... and you are using a Nvidia based graphics card ...
Back in Sep last year when I was helping a friend installing Ubuntu 14.04 dual-boot onto a Win 8.1 laptop - also with Nvidia graphic card, I also encountered scenario very similar to yours. In the end, I managed to resolve the problem by entering the following boot up kernel parameter: in place of quiet splash , adding acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor More detials in this URL: UEFI Installing - Tips http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2147295 It has lots of tips about all things Ubuntu install/dual-boot under UEFI, secure boot, etc. One section, titled: *Black Screen/ Video Modes.* For my case, after I had successfully booting up with my Ubuntu Live CD and installed it onto the laptop, I also needed to edit the relevant boot grub file to make sure the parameter acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor is in there permanently. H.T.H.
