Well, it dates back to those days when our computers didn't have heaps of ram to waste on a display buffer, so we used the display memory in the terminals (sure beat line based editing). Some of the fancier terminals had extra ram, which enabled multipage displays; the ti/te escape sequences allowed access to a second display page.
