Query on CUPS and printer drivers/filters, do you have a system user in your passwd file of lp? Who is the owner of the CUPS files, and who is the owner of the various filters/drivers? On my Debian 7.8 system, they are all owned by "root" and there is a comment in one CUPS file that at least some of them must not have the owner resolve to root.
