I can install SSMTP for a server with basic needs and it does not break the GUI desktop. For the sinister part: The threat of surveillance is not a made up fantasy. Snowden sits in Russia for a reason and Assange is stuck in London as well. The work is done on two fronts, through law (make it legal that all citizen are suspects and do not deserve privacy) and introduction of unsafe software. If open source software is a problem, fork it (until it talks to Google) and obfuscate it until it is impossible to scrutinize. Things never happen without a reason and not out of pure malice or stupidity. It's always worth asking who benefits.
