Looking at this issue again, I notice that even if I'm telling aplay to use a direct ALSA hardware device, pulseaudio's daemon still starts up in the background. Grr. I've purged pulseaudio from the system entirely now, so will see if that has an effect.. even though it wasn't meant to be being used. (Pulseaudio has normally been great, in my experience, but I don't like that it seems to be starting up even when unintended)
