in short what i'm after is:

  * cheap
  * open source data acquisition, visualisation, & analysis
  * open data formats
  * no mandatory spyware service

Any clues or pointers to relevant hardware or software would be appreciated.

Hi Craig,

Not sure what sports you're targeting, it can make a difference to apps.

Here's a couple of open source SW I know of, but haven't tried then myself.

https://github.com/pytrainer/pytrainer

https://www.goldencheetah.org/

Those programs  download from a range of fitness devices.
