That's probable a desktop environment issue. What desktop
environment are you
using? GNOME is the default for Ubuntu.

My problem is that when i plug a usb key into my laptop it
automatically uses Darktable to open the device. Now, if this were a
USB key containing only RAW files, I would be OK. But I just want the
file manager to open the drive without a preference.

I suspect the answer is nearly the same as what Russell suggested.
Assuming a Gnome desktop:
System Settings - Details - Removable Media - Other
I'm not a fan of the Gnome desktop, so I have nothing to confirm this on.
I hope at least it's a good place to start looking.
