Running things yourself is good and avoiding being locked in to proprietary
software (even when it's forks of free software as AWS does) is good. But for
avoiding big tech it's all about where you draw the line. Hetzner (the
company that owns the hardware used for the LUV VM) is a multinational hosting
company. But what I run on the hardware is the same as what any of you could
run at home, the software configuration is very similar to what I use to run
Linux training on VMs.

Developing the community skill base is a good thing too. Volunteers to help
run the LUV VM are always appreciated, being an expert is not required as you
can learn on the go. Anyone who's interested in helping can contact me and
Andrew Pam off-list.

Also for learning it's good to host your own VM. The Oracle Cloud seems to
have the best "free tier" offering at the moment. If we got a group of Linux
people who wanted to learn sysadmin with VMs on cloud services I could suggest
exercises to try out and give pointers to anyone who gets stuck.
