[lvm-discuss] How to Expand an active filesystem?

I was sure that I can expand a mounted filesystem sitting on the concatenated 
volume
by 
[i]metattach setname/volname newslice[/i]
and then [i]growfs[/i]'ing the filesystem.
But when I opened the documentation

the first step I see is "Unmount the file system."
[b]Can I expand a working filesystem?[/b][i][/i]
