I think you are confusing VMware are Linux Virtual Server (LVS). They are two different things. VMWare is used for virtual machines: virtualization of hardware. LVS is http://www.linuxvirtualserver.org/whatis.html The real servers are not limited to Linux and can be OS which supports TCP/IP.
