Sure but...
Let the device autoconfigure itself (dhcp, autoip...) then broadcast its
address. The PC receives the device address. If the device address is
"compatible" (on the same subnet) then it uses it. Else the PC computes
a "compatible" address and broadcasts it to the network. The device
receives the new address and reconfigures itself to use it.
