checking out from CVS to a folder, the MSVC6 sln doesn't build as-is.

the question is, where does the $(lwip) definition get set as I suspect this
is the issue.
Do you mean msvc6 dsw or msvc8 sln? I think both need the environment
variable LWIP_DIR set to the directory where the CHANGELOG file is.
