Thanks, the timers seem OK. I did learn a little more. It seems that connection creation takes some time (~1 sec?). Not having any familiarity with the inner workings of lwIP, I can't venture a guess what is going on. I have found that if I create a connection and then wait 1 second (ugh, a delay) before using the connection, even the first data moves much more quickly.
