Just out of curiousity I took a test system that was setup with ext4 installed LXD & chose ZFS backing store.
I showed a failure messge as expected but it also did something to the host file system so that it was no longer bootable. Should there be a warning when installing LXD when you get to the point of choosing DIR or ZFS backing store that your LXD host system must be on ZFS in order to choose ZFS ? I am only suggesting this so that those new to LXD & perhaps ZFS don't make some assumption that LXD somehow can be using ZFS regardless of the host's file system.
