Yeah, IIRC ubuntu decided to ditch 2d support from unity, so that's
what you get.

Try installing gnome-session-fallback, and run it by either:
- start the GUI session manually using "gnome-session
--session=gnome-fallback", OR
- if you use lightdm to handle remote login, click the icon on the
right of your username or the "login" text, choose "gnome fallback",
OR
- configure whatever remote login handler you use to run gnome-fallback session
