The way I do it is to switch out the lxsession startup file. Replace the @lxpanel by lxterminal (or whatever it is you use as a terminal) and then after you log in you can start lxpanel from that terminal. You then have stdout connected to something that you can see and you can run under the debugger or whatever it is you want to do.
I should mention that there seem to be two other items that need attention. One is the intermittent failure of the menu to draw. One is a crash-and-restart loop that was mentioned in the forum that it is suspected is the network applet crashing. I am not going to be a lot of help with either of these because I am not experiencing them.
