This is due to some error(?) in Pootle.
Some languages (English, German and Swedish[1]) have two forms of
strings in this context. The singular, where only one item is affected,
and plural, where more than one item is affected.
For some other languages (Arabic[2], Belarusian and Bosnian) have more
than two forms (Arabic have 6!) and then Pootle will show the correct
amount of input boxes.

For Malay you only need one form to describe both of the situations that
in English needs two boxes. And as far as I can tell from your first
attempt it sure looks like the strings are the same =)
All in all, you just need to put one string in these.

In your case:
Singular
%d item selected (%s)%s
Plural
%d items selected (%s)%s


will be:
%d barang-barang dipilih (%s)%s
