If I had the skills to amend the program myself, I wouldn't ask! :¬)

Sadly, though, my programming skills never extended much beyond BASIC,
Pascal & FORTRAN at University, and definitely do not encompass C and
Unix GUI coding.

As for switching - Ubuntu 9.04 has a little app for this, I believe.
It's called "switch desktop mode" or something like that. Alas it's
not on my current desktop machine but I spotted it on my netbook...
