I've not tried it in LXDE yet, but I too have linked to the blog post
you cite, on the Ubuntu-sounder mailing list. GNOME's vertical-panel
handling is a real pain. I am now using an Xfce panel on my GNOME
desktop to get a working vertical task list. It's still not great but
it's better than GNOME's.

As widescreens get more common, this will get more important.

It's amusing to note that Windows 7 handles a vertical taskbar
significantly less well than any previous version of Windows, even
Vista.

So if you can get it working better in LXDE, great!
