The default icon of app menu is taken from the original fbpanel. This, of course, can be changed if we have better artwork. The menu icon in LXDE is actually the bird icon since lxpanel uses a special set of config files for LXDE which uses the bird icon. So if you start LXDE by running startlxde, you should get the bird icon instead of the default one.
Ship the bird icon by default can make lxpanel look LXDE-specific and this might discourage the use of this panel in other DEs/WMs although it can work perfectly without LXDE.
