Hi, i'm Stephen Smally (the lubuntu software center guy).
I wrote a little application (named LxScreenshot) to take screenshot of
the desktop, originally for Lubuntu.
LxScreenshot is very simple (it can only take screenshot of the whole
desktop), but is stable, fast and with a little memory footprint
(something around 12 Mb). Is written in Vala, feel free to email me if
you want to contribute. (some features like 'take the screenshot of a
single window' would be nice)
