A general thought,

if the plugin provides a visual feedback of the network status, it
can be useful even for people not running Network Manager (like
myself). Note that the Network Manager is not universally the best
(or suitable) tool, while a visual feedback is nice to have.

(guessing that the Network Manager's gnome-applet is not usable alone,
or is it?)
