Thanks Melodie, that’s got me well on the way. I'm still looking for
better examples though, especially of the 'trash' one. On my MATE
desktop the trash icon can be right clicked which brings up a menu
which you can empty it from, that’s my goal. 

With regard to the drives icons. Its not going to be quite so easy as
the USB external drive and the phone are both hot-plugged, and
auto-mount when they're plugged in, they don't have any entry in fstab.
So I'm still looking, but thanks for the start :)
