Is there a guide about setting up the keyboard within lxde?

I have a number of gentoo/lxde systems running standard dell keyboards -
most started out as gnome3 and were converted to lxde as the gnomishness
destroyed productivity and we are generally happy with lxde.

However, two (only) machines have mixed up keymappings (i.e., down arrow
gives a down+<cr>, left arrow is <shift+tab> and a few others. All
attempts to use xsetkbmap to give a normal us en mapping still leave
some keys oddly mapped.

Console is ok and exactly what I want/expect ... its only within X/lxde
that is a problem. The original gnome mappings were ok as well.

I am not sure where to look where this is going wrong but I am beginning
to think its something the lxde install has left undone/broken, but cant
find so any hint would be appreciated.
