LXQt is a very easy project to get into; fork/clone whichever component you want to work on (from https://github.com/lxde) and just compile it and you can run it locally. File a pull request once you're done. If you're still interested after a decent amount of good contributions, you'll get commit access. :) If you want some inspiration, here are two you can choose from.
