Hello there!

The question was raised about setting XDG_DESKTOP_DIR to $HOME. While
it is possible, it's not so easy for users to understand what limitation
it gives to them, they always believe that desktop icons are simply icons
and not real files, and when they set XDG_DESKTOP_DIR to $HOME and then
they try to clear desktop from icons they (surprise!) lost every file
they ever had. I have no idea how they've set it in the first place but
they did. We had bugreports about that and to overcome such trouble it's
decided to deny setting XDG_DESKTOP_DIR to $HOME two years ago. And now
it's the question: should we revert that behavior and let inexperienced
users shoot themselves while let others to set XDG_DESKTOP_DIR to $HOME?
As for me, I always prefer to give users as much safety as I can and this
case bothers me as well so I would like to keep it as it is now. But what
everyone else think?

    With best regards,
    Andriy.
