lxdm sounds like it's part of LXDE, but on the other hand it's not in the 
debian repository, whereas LXDE itself is available and wherefrom I had 
installed it.

Never mind, with the help of you all I finally grasped the difference
between window manager and display manager. I'm going to kick off the
display manager and use startx instead. I tested this now by disabling
the startstop script of the display manager installed here (lightdm)
and yes, with startx the LXDE desktop starts fine.
Not sure if I can remove the now unneeded lightdm, because of the
said dependency warning (task-lxde-desktop : Depends: lightdm).
