I now have LXDE (Lubuntu) installed on all four of my linux systems. I
recommend it to my friends. I'm even going to put my MOTHER on it!!!!
That's commitment :)

I would be willing to do some work. I'm not sure where my skill levels
match your needs. I am a decent C, python, php, perl programmer, and
mostly would need help with setting up a development environment that
would allow me to actually debug code.

Among other things, I'd like to fix is the lack of an "arrange icons"
function for the desktop. This is in pcmanfm, I think. I can compile my
own pcmanfm, but how can I get it to control the desktop under a
debugger? Do I need two machines (a virt) and run the lxde/pcmanfm
under remote debugging from elsewhere? That seems like a good idea, but
I'd need help setting such a thing up so I can write and debug code.

Can somebody be my mentor?

I tried the forum, but as I read here, it seems the forum is down.
