Dear all,

I'm on lubuntu xenial and I've had all kinds of problems with fcitx which
I'm hoping somebody will at least have some input on debugging.

first off, can anybody confirm that fcitx works fine with, say, chinese
input on lxde?

The 3 primary problems I'm seeing:

1) the keyboard icon is often a penguin... now I don't care but the non
linux users I'm trying to support get flat out confused by that and I can't
blame them. Any idea why that's happening? also this is not consistent,
sometimes the penguin goes away and a keyboard icon appears. Ideally it
would have the two letters code of the lang like on windows, but some other
image would be ok too.
2) more often than not when I click on the keyboard/penguin icon I get a
super shrunk 1 line wide menu with scrolling arrows at the top and bottom.
If I click out and click again it goes away and I finally see a normal menu
3) in chinese mode I get a black square when I type instead of suggestions.
I tried to enable compton as I read that may be the case, but with that on
I see nothing instead of the black square. Still can't type any chinese.

These are the packages I have installed:

dpkg -l | grep fcitx | awk '{print $2 " " $3}'
fcitx 1:4.2.9.1-1ubuntu1

fcitx-ui-qimpanel 2.1.2-1

libfcitx-gclient0:amd64 1:4.2.9.1-1ubuntu1
libfcitx-qt0:amd64 1:4.2.9.1-1ubuntu1
libfcitx-qt5-1:amd64 1.0.5-1
libfcitx-utils0:amd64 1:4.2.9.1-1ubuntu1

configs are stock, I've tried to rm ~/.config/fcitx just in case and log
back and same problem.

Also when I log-in I noticed there's an fcitx defunct process child of
lxsession:

root 1483 0.0 0.3 228212 6336 ? Sl 15:52 0:00 \_
lightdm --session-child 12 21
adminis+ 1494 0.0 0.6 365312 13068 ? Ssl 15:52 0:00 \_
/usr/bin/lxsession -s Lubuntu -e LXDE
adminis+ 1537 0.0 0.0 11140 320 ? Ss 15:52 0:00
 \_ /usr/bin/ssh-agent /usr/bin/dbus-launch --exit-with-session
/usr/bin/im-launch /usr/bin/lxsession -s Lubuntu -e LXDE
adminis+ 1550 0.0 0.0 0 0 ? Z 15:52 0:00
 \_ [fcitx] <defunct>

any idea how I can get a clean and consistent setup to type english,
chinese and vietnamese? On some test installations in VMs it seems to work
but then it breaks, for example just now I was getting the popup with the
chinese characters but hitting spacebar or a number would not insert the
kanji.

thank you for your help,

Spike
