The problem is that it's really "deflate", which lynx could handle if
it only knew what it really is.  Saving the temporary file and running
the standalone "inflate" utility I used for testing last year works.

That was from some code that someone had incorporated into w3m.
Oddly, a quick check with w3m gets _some_ text, though the page
looks like a fragment of xml using w3m, while the inflated page
looks correct.

Short: I don't think there's something to fix in lynx, but it would
be nice for OP to have a copy of lynx for OS/2 that he can turn off
the "compress" option for that site (site is broken, not lynx).
