Maybe someone else can help with character rendering, I had no need to
adjust that so don't know the full details.

Thanks, settings seems to be saved, but characters are not rendered, e.g. a
web page header text:
Obama ~@~Ys ~@~XRed Carpet ~@~Y
Other characters are also not rendered. UTF-8 is the default setting.
