Can this behavior be overridden in lynx with a .mailcap entry for .gz
file extensions such that those are gunzipped?

Could this be related to the problem I reported that lynx
saves files with the .gz extension but doesn't gzip them?
lynx caches the pages in gzipped form but saves them
un-gzipped.
