The second idea, it is indeed in an email, might be the solution.
Can I type links instead of weget..which I have not used before?
I know with firmness that links the chain will prompt me to save the file,
with a name I choose.
will test this now.

It seems that, at least when I use pine or alpine for these downloads, lynx is
also attempting to unzip the file itself.
Any idea what might trigger this?
mailcap or MIME or something, most likely.
If this is a link within a page you already have in lynx, then
use the d key instead of the cursor-right or enter key to activate
the link, that will force a download.
If this is in an eMail, after you hit enter (or whatever), when it
asks you what to do with the link, don’t hit enter immediately;
rather, press A to change the application, Ctrl-K to delete the
preset value, enter 'wget' (without the quotes) and hit enter; then
it will use GNU wget instead of lynx, which by default will download
to your home directory I think, or possibly the one you started pine
(or alpine) from.
Good luck,

Wish I had pine to hand :-( I'll give lynx a try, thanks.
