I run lynx on an older laptop without an active matrix display, and
the colors are really washed out. I've found that the following colors
work really well:
COLOR:0:white:black
COLOR:1:brightblue:black
COLOR:2:black:yellow
COLOR:3:black:white
COLOR:4:cyan:black
COLOR:5:brightred:black
COLOR:6:black:yellow
COLOR:7:black:brightred
Of course, I'm now using lss, so these colors aren't used anymore, but
I have a similar color scheme in my lynx.lss file.
