Yes, I know; that's the problem.

What (still) I don't understand is why you think "With Unix permissions
set up as they are, that's got to be an error."  So I speculated you might
have thought only about directories.

I don't call it broken - it's just unexpected.  A program that fails
in obscure ways when faced with unexpected input is broken.
