Seems to me that that "+<numHiddenLinks>" suggestion is not bad, and can't hurt (doesn't take much screen-space). Likewise, maybe, for some of that pine stuff, warning (notifying) the user of something (important? -- depends on the user AND the page) not otherwise obvious. Perhaps like the chars at the left of each line in emacs' *Buffer List* page, little cryptic symbols that take no room, really, but tell you a lot.
