For instance  \345 in the Mutt pager for the Danish letter '�'.
ls-output exchanges Danish characters with '?' Lynx is just
fine, however.

SuSE Linux 6.4. with gettext-0.10.35-132. Don't know about a
version which is part of my C library...?

Lynx actually was fine with LANG=da as stated above.
