lynx-dev what to do when EDITOR is a shell script

On one system I use, the environmental variable EDITOR points to
a shell script (nvi-euc-jp).  When "e" is pressed in Lynx, the
screen just blinks, so I assume Lynx is not able to use the shell
script.  Does someone have a solution to this problem?
