an excellent resource!
what was needed (Mandrake Linux, bash) was `export TERM=xterm-color'.

there's still a problem that Lynx, Mutt & Most don't recognise `white'
-- `white' -> `lightgray' & `gray' -> `black' -- ,
whereas Vim has no such problem: any further thoughts?
