When using a gettext translation written in iso-8859-1 and setting the
output mode to UTF-8 (for example, while running in uxterm), the prompt
strings and similar given from Lynx are not converted correctly to the
output encoding, but are still iso-8859-1.

I can reproduce it e.g. as follows:

I do in an uxterm:
  export LANG=de_DE
  lynx

Then the status line at the bottom has (when it's a long start page) a
translated version of "press space for next page" but displays some kind
of rectangle instead of the letters "�" and "�".
